What is Psychosexual Therapy?
Psychosexual Therapy explores sexual and emotional problems within a relationship or individual. It treats the causes as well as the symptoms, considering physiological and physical causes.
Psychosexual Therapy opens a dialogue which may reveal past experiences, sexual trauma or confusing childhood messages around sex. Therapy can be used to increase sexual confidence, enhance compatibility and improve relationships.
Sexual problems may be longstanding, or related to more recent events which have caused stress, confusion or unhappiness. Some of the issues which may be addressed are;
- Breakdown in a couple’s sexual relationship
- Loss of sexual desire
- Painful intercourse
- Difficulties with orgasm
- Arousal disorders
- Erectile dysfunction
- Premature or delayed ejaculation
- Compulsive sexual behaviour
Sex addiction, also known as sexual compulsion, describes any sexual activity that feels “out of control”. A sex addict feels compelled to seek out and engage in sexual behaviour, in spite of the problems it may cause to their life. The essential difference between the addict and the non-addict is that these behaviours feel out of control and they may be unable to stay stopped. Another key factor is that the sex addict chooses sex as their way to cope with their pain
