We have 14 years experience of carrying out STI/STD and HIV tests on thousands of patients. A recurring theme is the use of alcohol in such a way that men and women find themselves in situations which would not occur if they were sober. In particular, this usually involves having unprotected sex with a stranger or sex worker. We see the patients in the cold light of day when guilt and remorse have begun-people often fear that their marriage or long term relationship has been put under threat by this act.
It is arguable whether allowing yourself consciously to be under the influence of drink and/or drugs is deliberately putting you in the line of fire. The excuse of “I was drunk” is hollow when the patient deliberately allows this to happen. So we say to patients that the remorse they feel should be a learning experience and hopefully not be repeated too often.
