There is much debate about the use and over prescribing of antibiotics for patients with sore throats. Most sore throats are caused by viruses, however streptococci (“strep throat”) are bacteria and untreated streptococcal infections can be serious. In order to aid our clinicians who work in in our private doctor samedaydoctor clinics we often take rapid strep throat swabs with same day results. Furthermore we can run same day blood tests for C-reactive protein (CRP) whereby levels help us distinguish between viral and bacterial infections.
In doing so we do find approximately 25% of sore throats are caused by bacterial infections and denying antibiotics to these patients can result in serious long term consequences. Samedaydoctor runs 4 walk in clinics in the UK open up to 7 days per week for private GP consultations, sexual health tests and travel vaccinations as well as some specialist and Consultant services.
