Same-day STI testing is the process by which you make your appointment and see a GP on the same day. You will have a consultation about your concerns, then have samples taken and sent for analysis at an accredited laboratory.
It’s unlikely that you will get the results of the lab tests on the same day you have your appointment, so same-day STI testing refers to the speed at which you can get to see a GP rather than find out the results.
During your GP appointment, you’ll be asked about your medical history, including any current medications, the reason why you think you may have an STI, and when you think you may have been exposed to infection.
It’s important to bear in mind that infections may not show up immediately, and every infection has a different time window before tests can detect it. So if you present too early after potential infection, you may need to postpone the test for a later date.
You will be asked to give a urine sample so try not to go to the loo for a couple of hours before the appointment. You’ll probably also have to have a blood sample taken, but this will depend on the type of infection you may have.
At SameDayDoctor, we do a number of standard screenings for STIs such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea, HIV, syphilis, herpes, hepatitis B, trichomonas vaginalis, HPV.
Depending on your circumstances, we will test for individual infections or a group of STIs.
If you're experiencing any symptoms such as a discharge, or changes in the skin, you definitely need to get tested as soon as possible, and that’s where you may need same-day STI testing.
Other reasons you might want to get tested are: if you’ve had unprotected sex, you’ve got a new sexual partner, as part of ongoing sexual health management, or if you just need peace of mind.
It’s important to remember that STIs can be asymptomatic - i.e. there are no obvious symptoms - so you may not even be aware you have one. STIs that can remain asymptomatic for a long time include chlamydia, gonorrhoea and HIV. So if you think you may have been exposed to an infection, it’s always best to get tested.
Do not expect same-day results. How long you’ll need to wait for the laboratory to turn round the results of your STI tests will depend on the specific tests being undertaken. Some tests simply can’t be rushed so rapid screening would be impossible in these cases.
Your doctor will give you a better idea of how long you’ll have to wait during your consultation, but to give you a general idea, the most common tests tend to take around 1-3 days on average.
If you’re based in Central London, the City of London or Canary Wharf, you can book a confidential appointment or just walk in for same-day STI screening at aSameDayDoctor clinic. We offer sexual health services and our GPs are all experienced in the diagnosis and treatment ofsexually transmitted infections.
One of the advantages of booking same-day STI testing through a private GP like SameDayDoctor is that you’ll be seen straight away and you’ll get a longer consultation. Getting more time with a doctor means they’ll be able to explain things and go through your options in greater detail. You’ll also have the opportunity to ask lots of questions.
The other main advantage is that all SameDayDoctor’s clinics are open on Saturday mornings, and ourCentral London Clinic (located just off Harley Street) is open 7 days a week. This means you can access private GP services at weekends and get tested as soon as possible. Check each clinic for opening times.
Yes. All our clinics offer walk-in appointments, and we’ll fit you in as soon as we can. It’salways better to book if possible in order to reduce the risk of waiting time. Book an appointment through our online booking system, or by phoning your nearest clinic directly.
This will depend on the type/s of STI you’re being tested for and bear in mind that some blood tests could take up to three working days. Your doctor will give you a better idea of the expected timescale during your confidential consultation.
No. In fact many people don’t know they have an STI because they’re asymptomatic (they don’t have any symptoms), which means they could be unwittingly passing it on to sexual partners. STI testing is sometimes the only way to know if you’ve been infected, so it’s always a good idea to get tested if you think you may be infected or at risk of infection.
You’ll need to share your medical history with the doctor, so take a list of your medication if you’re on any. You’ll also be asked about when you think you might have been exposed to infection. In addition, you’ll be asked for a urine sample so it’s best to avoid going to the toilet for a couple of hours before your appointment.
