Cervical Screening
SameDayDoctor can arrange a private cervical smear test to check the cervix at a time convenient to you, including after work or at the weekend and you can have the results in just 1 week. We have a highly qualified team of expert GPs and nurse practitioners for you to choose from & you can request a female doctor or nurse practitioner if you prefer. A smear test cannot be performed during a period so please book an appointment any time when you are not bleeding.
Women aged between 25 and 49 are recommended to have a smear test every three years, and women aged between 50 and 64 every five years. Private screening through SameDayDoctor allows you to choose how often you would like to be screened, with some women choosing to screen test annually, and at what age you would like to start having smear tests. Many women find it reassuring to start having cervical smears before the age of 25 years, with significant media attention on women who have had cervical cancer at a young age.
During your cervical screening, a brush is used to collect a few cells from the cervix which is the neck of the womb. These are analysed to look to see if there are any warning signs or abnormal cells that a woman may be at risk of developing cervical cancer. If any abnormalities in the cells are found these can be treated to prevent cancer developing.
Book an appointment now if you would like to arrange your private smear test through SameDayDoctor available at any of our private walk-in clinics.
Cervical Screening FAQs
Can I have a smear test done privately?
Yes of course, we have female medical and nurse specialists who can do this in all of our clinics.
Can you pay for a smear test under 25?
Yes we can do a smear test if you are under the age of 25 if deemed appropriate
What happens during a cervical screening?
The smear involves taking some fluid from around the neck of the womb via a vaginal examination which is used to collect cells which are then analysed for early warning signs & abnormal cells that a woman may be at risk of developing cervical cancer.
How do you prepare for a smear test?
The cervical smear is best taken mid-cycle while you are not on your period & not bleeding. Otherwise, no specific preparation is required.
Do smear tests hurt?
No. We try to minimise any slight discomfort to our patients and you shouldn’t experience any pain during the smear.
Why are smear tests recommended every 3 years?
Smear tests are advised regularly because the HPV (human papillomavirus) virus can cause gradual changes to the cells which require regular monitoring.
What do I wear to a smear test?
It is entirely up to the patient. You will be able to prepare and disrobe in complete privacy. A gown is worn during the procedure.

The results are usually available in 7-10 days
