The NHS and the Private Medical sector

Recent increased spending announced for the NHS is to be welcomed by patients and medical teams working in healthcare in the UK. This should help to reduce waiting lists and improve access to NHS services. We are awaing announcements on whether reforms to the NHS will also be initiated to make the most of this extra funding.

At samedaydoctor we believe that the NHS should be accessible to all without significant financial barriers to patients. However it remains to be seen that providing NHS servies free at the point of use is sustainable in the long term. In our private GP service we offer same day and walk in appointments and we like to work hand in hand with the NHS to try to provide seamless access to excellent medical care for as many people as possible.

Other European countries offer a better mix of state/private services for medical care with insurance backed options for most of the population. It will be a long time before the UK is ready to consider such options, and it is important that any fee based servies provides protection for the most vulnerable in our society, in particular for children, the elderly, those with serious and chronic diseases and low incomes.

Hopefully in time we will see a reduction in NHS waiting lists and faster access to NHS GP services. In the meantime we continue to strive to provide first class medical care.
