We have been running more routine checks during this winter on vitamin D levels.
Vitamin D can be synthesized if the skin is exposed to sunlight, but in the middle of a long English winter the opportunities for sun exposure are limited. Most vitamins cannot be synthesized (hence the name which comes from vital amines) -we have been surprised at how low the levels can drop during the winter.
It is not clear if this causes symptoms as such, but vitamin D is essential for bone growth and strength and can be found in foods especially dairy products. A severe lack of vitamin D causes rickets, rarely seen in the UK now, but we have been doing blood tests on several vitamin levels and advising supplements where appropriate.
