We have 14 years of experience carrying out STI/STD, and HIV tests on thousands of patients at our private walk in clinics. A recurring theme is the use of alcohol in such a way that men and women find themselves in situations that would not occur if they were sober. In particular, this usually involves having unprotected sex with a stranger or sex worker. We see the patients in the cold light of day, when guilt and remorse have begun. People frequently worry that this act has put their marriage or long-term relationship in danger.
It is arguable whether allowing yourself consciously to be under the influence of drink and/or drugs is deliberately putting you in the line of fire. The excuse of "I was drunk" is hollow when the patient deliberately allows this to happen. So we say to patients that the remorse they feel should be a learning experience and hopefully not be repeated too often.
